Mariama Zaami is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana. Her research areas include gender and poverty, migration, immigration, race and ethnicity, globalization and development, and livelihood change. Her research highlights the role of ethnicity and associated challenges of Ghanaian and Sudanese immigrant youth in Calgary in navigating through mainstream society's social spaces.

She has worked on SSHRC-Funded research projects including, 1) immigration, race, ethnicity, and identity in Sudan, and 2) enhancing the wellbeing of immigrant women retirees in Calgary, Alberta. In Ghana, her research focuses on the gendered patterns of migration from rural to urban locations and the implications of these movements for livelihoods, family welfare, and access to community resources.
