Professor Shteiwi obtained his Ph.D. degree in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently the Director of the Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) at the University of Jordan. He has over 27 years of experience as a professor at the University of Jordan, having taught in sociology, human rights, development and gender studies programs. Furthermore, he played an advisory role and consultant for government bodies, the World Bank, UN and other international organisations and research institutions.
His expertise lies in conceptualising and carrying out empirical research projects, policy and strategic analysis. He has published more than 40 scientific articles, papers and books in the fields of development, social policies, gender, social classes, political development, Syrian refugees, and extremism.
He was able to steer the center to respond to the many challenges facing Jordan and the region, such as the Syrian refugees’ crisis, violent extremism, and regional security. During his leadership as the Director of CSS, the Center was ranked the top Think Tank in the Middle East and North Africa for three consecutive years (2016-2018) by the University of Pennsylvania. Moreover, in 2018 the Center was bestowed the Order of AL-ISTIQLAL (Independence) of the first degree in recognition of its effort by his majesty king Abdullah bin Al Hussein.
